Most smokers and tobacco users want to quit, and support from local stop smoking services makes someone three times as likely to quit successfully than through willpower alone

We are working with Tameside Council to evaluate the effectiveness of four quit smoking and tobacco-free campaigns in connecting residents to local services to support them to quit. The four campaigns are targeting:
• Niche tobacco users in racially minoritised communities
• Low-income residents who smoke
• Routine and manual workers who smoke
• The wider societal harms of smoking and tobacco

Campaign research will include:

• Using website tracking tools to explore whether the campaigns reached their intended audiences.
• Attending community events, running surveys, conducting interviews and focus groups with residents to explore awareness of each campaign, motivation to quit, and how to access quit support.
• Impact analysis — examining stop smoking service data to assess engagement with quit support.
Over a 12 month period, we will measure the reach, engagement and outcomes achieved by each campaign.
The findings from our research will inform the Tameside Tobacco-free Plan that is part of the wider Tameside Healthy Places Strategic Framework and future work to reduce smoking and tobacco-use prevalence and tackle health inequalities, helping Tameside target its public health investment where it can have the greatest impact.
